Trees - Shirland Triangle

Shirland Triangle – Tree Update

As Chair of the Parish Council, I would like to address residents' concerns regarding the recent discussions about the trees located on the Shirland Triangle. I understand the community's interest and wish to clarify the situation and the thought process behind it.

First and foremost, no final decision has been made regarding the potential felling of any of the trees whether this be one, two, three or none at all. The only decision taken at the Parish Council meeting on the 16th October 2025 was to obtain quotes from three companies for possible future work which is why you may have seen contractors on site looking at the trees to help them prepare the quotes This is simply part of the information gathering process and does not mean any action has been approved.

The Parish Council has been asked whether the trees are subject to a Tree Preservation Order or are within a Conservation Area. I can confirm that the three trees do not fall into either of these categories.

It is important to note that the Council's conversations have been exploratory only. One idea emphasized as only a discussion point was that, if a tree were to be removed, it could be replaced with a purpose planted Christmas tree. This would provide a central focal point during the festive season, creating a more appealing display for residents and for those passing through Shirland.

I wish to dispel any rumours suggesting that felling work has already been approved or is underway as this is not the case. The Parish Council remains committed to open communication and will continue to consult with residents before any decisions are made.

Thank you for your understanding and for sharing your views as we work together to make Shirland a place we can all take pride in.

Cllr Mike Roe

Chair of Shirland and Higham Parish Council

Parish Council meeting 21st August 2025

Please note that this meeting is to be held at Shirland Village Hall and not at Stonebroom Pavilion.

Lamppost poppies

As you are aware for several years the Parish Council has been proud to arrange the installation of Poppies on a large number of lamp columns throughout the Parish.

The Parish Council are extremely grateful to the Royal British Legion Riders who have taken the time in the past to put up and remove the Poppies and have done a fantastic job.

Unfortunately, the group are unable to assist this year and therefore we are asking if any local charities are interested in carrying out this task for a donation from the Parish Council. If any groups are interested please contact the Parish Clerk on 07912 270066 or email [email protected]

Please note that this work involves the use of a step ladder at the side of the highway and therefore is unsuitable for children.

Allotment Plot

The Parish Council has a plot available on the allotment site on Mickley Lane (the newer of the 2 allotment sites).

If you are interested please contact the Parish Clerk on 07912 270066 or email [email protected]
