The Parish Sportsground is located on Birkinstyle Lane, Stonebroom, and is an amenity area comprising football and cricket pitches, a multi-use games area, tennis courts, a children’s play area and the Parish Pavilion. These facilities are provided by the Parish Council for the use of all parishioners. They are looked after by a Caretaker.
The Pavilion was opened in 2008 and, at a cost of a third of a million pounds provided in part by Viridor, Wren, Enventure and Biffa, replaced an older, inadequate building destroyed by arson some five years previously. The Pavilion is a state of the art building with every facility and is available for use by sports teams and small local groups needing a meeting room. A youth club and a table tennis club meet there and are run by local volunteers as is the Stonebroom Snipers youth football team. Whilst no charge is made for the use of the building it is appreciated if a donation is made to cover the costs of maintenance, light and heating.
The multi-use games area was added in 2010 and has proved popular. Football, cricket and basketball can be played there and spectator pods are incorporated.
Tennis can be played on the two hard courts beside the MUGA.
The Sportsground is still in the process of development. Recently car park lighting has been added and CCTV has been introduced to help protect this facility where £½m has been spent in the last few years in an attempt to improve the quality of life for parishioners. It is hoped that pitch drainage will soon take place and that other amenities will be added to further improve this much used and successful area.
