Help Us to Make our Villages Safer Places for Driving or Walking
For some time now Shirland, Mickley, Higham and Stonebroom residents have been complaining about the state of their pavements and roads. Parishioners have not only been appalled by the poor state of roads and pavements but also have witnessed poor or incomplete repairs which have done little to alleviate the problems. Many of the roads still have a number of potholes which can make driving hazardous not to mention expensive as potholes can cause damage to a vehicle's suspension and steering.
But its not only potholes that are causing concern. Pavements too suffer from overgrown vegetation or have slippy surfaces that make treacherous walking conditions for all residents.
The parish Council has made its concerns known to Derbyshire County Council who are responsible for maintaining our pavements and roads. Members of the public have brought their worries to our meetings and spoken directly with County Council representatives but the response has been 'patchy'. Many of the roads and pavements that have been identified as requiring attention will not be repaired until the next financial year. Even then, the repairs may only be temporary.
Although some repairs have been carried out concern exists as to how long these will last once the roads become frosty or covered in ice.
Similar issues exist too with pavements that have not been maintained and are potentially dangerous for elderly or infirm people to use. Excessive vegetation on the surface of the pavement or vegetation that is overgrown can make the simple task of walking to the shops more like an obstacle course.
The Parish Council is therefore keen to assist wherever possible in ensuring our roads and pavements are as safe as possible and we seek your help in this objective.
If you spot a potential hazard on the road or pavement, please take a photograph and send it together with the location to us and we will report the problem to Derbyshire County Council on your behalf, monitor the situation and keep the pressure on County Council to effect repairs and improvements.
We will also publish your photographs on this website to warn other parishioners of the hazards. With your support we can champion this cause and help make our neighbourhood a safer place to live.
